Water comes in high, runs along a rafter or the top of the drywall, and shows up wherever the ceiling is weakest. Finding the entry point is the whole job. On a Spring house that starts in the attic, with a flashlight, ruling out the things that are not the roof.
Houses in Spring and Klein are slab-on-grade or pier-and-beam, so the air handler lives in the attic with its condensate pan and drain line, and the upstairs supply plumbing often runs through the same space. A stain that showed up after a dry week is more likely one of those. A stain that arrives during rain, or only when wind is driving rain against one side of the house, points at the roof, and on a roof under trees it points most often at a valley or at the flashing where a second-story wall meets a lower slope.
The attic visit settles it. The roofer follows the water trail on the underside of the decking uphill to its highest point, checks the boots and the wall lines, and looks at the pan under the air handler on the way past.
Pine straw dams the valley, water backs up sideways under the shingle edge, and the decking along the valley line goes soft. The commonest leak on a 1980s Klein roof.
Where a two-story brick or hardboard wall meets a lower roof, the step flashing carries every drop that runs down the wall. Failed siding above it adds more.
The rubber collar around a plumbing vent cracks in attic heat after twelve to fifteen years. A limb strike can split it earlier.
A limb that bounced off the roof last spring broke the seal and cracked a shingle without leaving a hole. The leak starts the next hard rain.
One entry point on a roof with granules, sealed tabs and sound decking is a repair, and it should be quoted as one. If the roofer opens the valley and finds the decking soft for three feet on either side, the repair grows but stays a repair. If the water is coming in at two places on different slopes in the same season, the roof is describing a field failure, and that is a different conversation, which the repair-or-replace page lays out. A leak by itself is not a reason to replace a roof, whatever the estimate says.
Timing. Stains that come with rain point up at the roof; stains that appear in dry weather point at the air handler pan or a supply line in the attic. A dry-day attic check separates them in an hour.
A temporary cover can go on. A lasting repair needs dry decking, so the real fix follows when the weather clears.
Only if the roof is otherwise at the end of its life. One source on a sound roof is a repair, and on a Spring roof under trees the source is usually a valley, a wall line or a boot.
