A loblolly pine sheds all year and heaviest in fall, and every needle that lands on a roof ends up in a gutter. In Spring, gutter work is a standing repair category, not a seasonal add-on, because the alternative is fascia rot and water at the slab.
They mat. A layer of wet pine straw in a gutter weighs more than the hangers were spaced for, the gutter sags between them, water pools in the sag and the seam at the nearest corner splits. Downspouts pack solid at the elbow. In a hard rain the whole run overflows at the back, behind the fascia, and the fascia rots. It also overflows at the front, onto the flower bed and the slab edge, which on expansive clay is its own problem. None of this is a roof failure. All of it gets blamed on the roof.
A 1990s aluminum gutter with a sag and a split seam is a repair: cleanout, new hangers at closer spacing, the seam resealed, the downspout cleared. A 1980s builder gutter that is undersized for the roof area, pulling away from a fascia that has already gone soft, and patched at three corners is at the end, and the honest answer is new gutters, hung on new fascia, sized for the volume of water and the volume of needles. The contractor should say which it is and why, the same way a roofer says repair or replace on the shingles.
Pine needles defeat most gutter guards. Mesh screens mat over; foam inserts fill; reverse-curve covers shed needles onto the ground but also shed a good deal of water in a downpour. Fine micro-mesh guards do the best job under pines and still need the top brushed off. A guard is a way of cleaning out less often, not never. A cleaning schedule tied to the fall drop, plus trimming the limbs that overhang the roof, is the part that works.
At least twice a year, and once more after the fall needle drop for a roof directly under loblollies. Once a year is not enough here.
Possibly, but check the cheaper cause first: needles at the downspout elbow. A cleared gutter that still overflows on a large roof section is undersized or has too few downspouts.
